COURSE GUIDE 2024

SUPERIOR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE FOR SKIN HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND AESTHETIC PRACTITIONERS

WELCOME Intermed Clinical was founded in 2004 by a small team with vast experience of medical lasers dating back to the 1980’s. Our expertise includes clinical science and training in technical and biomedical topics. Intermed Clinical Ltd is now part of Skin Group International Ltd (SGI), a group of companies which include training for aesthetic and medical practitioners. OUR VISION This course guide focuses on our 16 quality assured endorsed training programmes in Laser, IPL & Skin Rejuvenation therapies, developed as a result of the evolution of a separate sector within the industry – that of Aesthetic Practice. With the rapid growth in the industry over recent years, SGI identified a need for robust education and training. To provide this, we secured the services of experienced subject experts and acquired intellectual property through targeted acquisitions. SGI acquired Intermed Clinical Ltd in 2017 to enable us to continue to respond to emerging trends, both for those already working in the sector, and for individuals who may wish to enter the sector. Thus, our vision is that our courses will enable you to stand out in this competitive specialist field as the best of the best.

LASER STANDARDS

Providing Aesthetic treatments to the general public is not something to be taken lightly – all laser and IPL users have a duty of care to their clients and colleagues under Health and Safety Legislation.

Clients expect their treatments to be safe and wish for successful outcomes. You need to be properly trained to use your equipment safely and successfully by the manufacturer/supplier of your equipment, and also to ensure you complying with local and national guidelines. As of July 2019, the single piece of UK legislation that applies to the use of laser and intense pulsed light is ‘The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010’. This law came into force in 2010 with the aim to protect workers (and others) from the risks to health from hazardous sources of artificial optical radiation (AOR). Laser and Intense Pulsed Light treatments are specifically described in this legislation and businesses must ensure that they comply with this.

Your local environmental health department and your insurance company should be your first port of call for any advice relating to training and licensing/regulatory requirements.

Level 3

ACCESS COURSE FOR LASER, IPL & LED – HAIR & SKIN PROCEDURES (£145) This course is aimed at individuals seeking a career using light-based devices such as Lasers, Intense Pulsed Light or LED's for skin & hair treatments but who do not have a relevant beauty or scientific qualification or background. It is recommended that these learners complete this access course before studying the Level 4 'Core of Knowledge' course. Some local authorities insist that learners complete a Level 3 learning course before moving on to a more detailed Level 4 course. This new access course fills the gap needed to understand the principles of using light-based treatments. The access course covers basic anatomy of the skin plus physical properties of light. It introduces treatment principles and types of equipment used in cosmetic treatments of skin and hair. The course also covers the currently bewildering aspect of UK regulatory issues when using light-based systems in the UK. CORE OF KNOWLEDGE FOR LASER, IPL & LED – HAIR & SKIN (£145) The 'Core of Knowledge' is a syllabus set out in the Department of Health MHRA bulletin "Guidelines for the Safe Use of Lasers, Intense Light Sources and LED's in Medicine, Surgery, Dental and Cosmetic Practice". The most recent update of this document was published in 2015. The 'Core of Knowledge' (along with operator training on the specific equipment in use) is considered to be the most basic knowledge of lasers and light sources that is usually required by local authorities, insurers and other regulatory bodies. This comprehensive online training has been designed to allow the user to study at their own pace and when ready, to complete an online multiple-choice assessment. The course also includes an online "Risk Assessment" exercise and allows users to download supporting material for future reference. CORE OF KNOWLEDGE FOR LASER, IPL & LED – HAIR & SKIN (REFRESHER) (£110) Many UK local authorities and insurers insist that laser and intense light source users complete a refresher 'Core of Knowledge' periodically - the interval specified varies from 3 to 5 years. Please check with your own local authority or regional regulatory body the exact requirement in your area. To simplify the process Intermed Clinical has introduced a system whereby a user completes an online assessment to check that their knowledge is up to date. ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY – HAIR, SKIN & NAILS (£145) This online course has been developed to provide learners with knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology systems that are involved in Laser & IPL treatments. The body systems covered include: Skin, Hair and Nails, Components of Blood, the Circulatory System, The Lymphatic System, an overview of Immunology, the Endocrine System, Wound Healing and Ageing Skin. Level 4

Along with the Core of Knowledge course, this Anatomy & Physiology course underpins all other Laser & IPL courses offered by Intermed Clinical.

LASER & IPL - HAIR REMOVAL & SKIN REJUVENATION PROCEDURES (£1,000) This course has been developed to provide practitioners with a convenient method of gaining the necessary Level 4 learning needed to offer Laser & IPL Hair Removal and Skin Rejuvenation Procedures. The course is divided into modules that provide the learner with access for up to two months per module. There are four theory modules plus a practical module which allows us to assess a learner's Hair Removal and Skin Rejuvenation practical skills. LASER, IPL & LED - ACTIVE ACNE SKIN PROCEDURES (£375) This course is an "add-on" course to the Level 4 Laser & IPL course. It has been developed to provide practitioners with a convenient method of gaining the necessary Level 4 learning needed to offer Laser, IPL or LED Active Acne treatments in accordance with the Health Education England training guidelines. NON-INVASIVE ULTRASOUND CAVITATION – LIPOLYSIS PROCEDURES (£145) This course is aimed at clients who are already using Ultrasound Cavitation Lipolysis equipment or are about to install such a system at their premises. Ultrasound Cavitation is a popular method for carrying out non-invasive "fat busting" lipolysis treatments. This online course covers the treatment theory including information on medical contra-indications and precautions that should be taken during the procedure. NON-INVASIVE CLASS 3B DIODE LASER – LIPOLYSIS PROCEDURES (£145) This course is aimed at clients who are already using Diode Laser Lipolysis equipment or are about to install such a system at their premises. Laser Lipolysis is a popular method for carrying out non- invasive inch-loss treatments targeting specific areas of stubborn fat. This online course covers the treatment theory including information on medical contra-indications and precautions that should be taken during the procedure. NON-INVASIVE RADIOFREQUENCY – SKIN TIGHTENING PROCEDURES (£145) This course is aimed at clients who are already using Radiofrequency Skin Tightening equipment or are about to install such a system at their salon. Radiofrequency Skin Tightening is a popular method for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and folds of lax skin. This online course covers the treatment theory including information on medical contra-indications and precautions that should be taken during the procedure. EAR & NOSE PIERCING COURSE (£225) This course is aimed at individuals based in Salons, Clinics, Pharmacies, Jewellery retail outlets, Tattoo/Piercing studios, etc., that wish to undertake an endorsed course for carrying out Ear & Nose piercings using the hand-pressured Safe Pierce system. Unlike most other piercing systems, the piercing earring or nose stud is not fired through the tissues using a spring- loaded mechanism but instead uses a gentle manual system. Additionally, the earrings and nose studs are completely enclosed providing a no-touch sterile method of placement. The earrings also have a safety back that prevents damage and discomfort which could otherwise be caused by a sharp earring post. We are also able to provide learners with 'face to face' training options for ear & nose piercing using this system at one of SGI’s training centres or even bespoke training arranged at your own premises.

Level 5

LASER & IPL PROTECTION SUPERVISOR (LPS) (£350) This course is aimed at individuals who are working as an Aesthetic Laser Protection Supervisor (LPS) at their practice - it is usual that in practices where there are several Laser or IPL operators that a Laser Protection Supervisor is appointed to ensure that the practice of Local Rules is followed by the team on a day-to-day basis. The course reviews the safety theory of the 'Core of Knowledge' in more detail and sets out the role of the Laser Protection Supervisor. The course includes an online assessment of the presented theory, but additionally the learner must carry out reflective study of the reference materials supplied in order to create and submit various 'workbooks' that will be assessed - these cover detailed analysis of the practice's risk assessment and the related local rules. LASER TATTOO REMOVAL (£1,250) This course has been developed to provide Laser Technicians, Tattooists and other Practitioners with a convenient method of gaining the necessary learning required to offer Laser Tattoo Removal treatments. The course is divided into seven modules - six online theory modules plus a practical module which allows us to assess the learner's skills. Q-SWITCHED ND:YAG LASERS – CARBON LASER FACIAL PROCEDURES (£145) This course is aimed at practitioners who are already using a tattoo removal laser or are about to install one at their premises. The Carbon Laser Facial is an additional treatment that can be offered using most of the popular Q- switched Nd:Yag lasers, and can therefore increase the owner’s laser business. The technique only requires the use of a special inexpensive tip for the laser and some special carbon paste which is applied to the client's skin. This course provides a comprehensive view of the treatment including a step by step guide to safely carrying out this facial rejuvenation procedure, and additionally covers a new enhanced two stage treatment that improves the reduction of fine lines. Q-SWITCHED ND:YAG LASERS – NAIL FUNGAL PROCEDURES (£145) Nail fungal infections (Onychomycosis) are often difficult to treat with traditional anti-fungal drugs - many of which are highly toxic and require clients to have regular blood tests to check for any signs of liver damage. Recently, different types of lasers have been used to treat these nail plate fungal infections with varying degrees of success. At first, most of these lasers were long pulsed systems that heated the nail bed in an effort to destroy the filaments of fungus. However, recently a technical paper was published by a team of European researchers that describes the use of the Q-switched Nd:Yag laser normally used for tattoo removal. If the learner does not have access to suitable equipment, the practical assessment can be carried out at one of SGI’s fully equipped training centres.

This laser procedure is extremely easy to carry out and provides an additional treatment that can expand the use of the popular Q-switched Nd:Yag laser found in many UK tattoo studios and clinics.

5

LASER & IPL PROCEDURES – FACIAL BENIGN VASCULAR LESIONS ((ANGIOMAS, CAPILLARIES & TELANGIECTASIA) (£485) This course has been developed to provide practitioners with a convenient method of gaining the necessary learning required to offer Laser & IPL treatments for vascular lesions in accordance with the Health Education England (HEE) training guidelines. Although the information presented in this course is brief, it requires learners to not only pass the online assessment, submit a video of themselves carrying out a treatment and also to create an online portfolio of client treatments. This is in line with the recommendations of the HEE whose training report suggests that proof of carrying out a number of successful treatments supports the view of competency that the learner has demonstrated appropriate skills. LASER & IPL PIGMENTED PROCEDURES - EPHILIDES & BENIGN LENTIGINES (£500) This course has been developed to provide practitioners with a convenient method of gaining the required learning to offer Laser treatments for discrete pigmented lesions in accordance with the JCCP training guidelines.
